Our main activity this year is the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the
Great Camp on Chobham Common.
The Great Camp in 1853 was arguably the most important thing that has ever
happened in Chobham. In particular the visit of Queen Victoria made
a lasting impression.
There are several events during 2003 in Chobham to
celebrate the 150th anniversary.
- The Chobham Museum is running a display of Great
Camp images and memorabilia throughout the Summer until end September.
- Mary Bennett of the Surrey Heath Museum gave an
illustrated talk on the subject of the Great Camp. More than a hundred
people attended and were very appreciative.
- We organised a Battlefield Walk on Chobham Common
which was attended by more than 30 people.
- The Great Camp was the theme of the Chobham
Museum's third anniversary celebrations on Benham's Corner on Saturday 27th
September. Click in the margin on the left to see a photographic story
from this
day.
- On Saturday November 1st, the Chobham Reduced World
Theatre Company will be performing a restaging of the successful 1853 London
theatre farce "The Camp at Chobham" in the Village Hall.
There will be a matinee and an evening performance.
