Febuary is the cruelest month ............

But even in this fill-dyke month when ponds and ditches are glassed over, the rookeries are alive with raucous cries as the birds build their nests ready for their early breading season.

One of the biggest rookeries in the Chobham area is just north of Fairoaks.  Just after dawn the rooks leave for their daytime foraging area - often near Chobham Place.   The same birds can be seen returning just before dusk.   Even throughout the Winter they fly in pairs; hence Spring mating does not need to wait for the elaborate rituals of territorial birdsong and courtship.

Now, if you have time to wait for a minute .....  you will hear the sounds of the rookery; one of the most evocative sounds in Chobham.
