August is a quiet month for Nature in Chobham .......Birds have now largely stopped singing territorally. The adults have worn dull feathers; the brown non-descript young skulk in dense foliage. Chobham Common becomes hot and dry. The sandy paths become deep and wearisome to walk on - especially in the heat of the day. But despite all this it is glorious! Why? - because in August Chobham Common is ablaze with purple - the common heather - 'Ling' is in flower. It sweeps across the gentle slopes - as far as can be seen. The air is pungent with a remembered aroma of honey taken from bees living in heather. So on a warm sunny day, get out in the early morning before it becomes too hot and enjoy the sights and scents. |
